Pediatric and Adult Allergy-Immunology
Procedures Performed in the Office:

SPIROMETRY:
This test is done to test your lung function. It will help in the diagnosis and management of
asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and chronic bronchitis).
You will be asked to breath in and out a small device.

ALLERGY SKIN TESTS:

These tests are performed to help determine what allergens aggravate your allergies and
asthma symptoms, such as tree and grass pollens, weeds, molds, animal dander and
house dust mites. Based on the results, you will be given avoidance measures instructions,
and if indicated, specific allergy shots can be prescribed as an effective treatment.
A detailed history will be taken prior to the test to determine what allergens you should be
tested with.
The history and physical exam will also determine whether you have any condition that would
contraindicate performing the tests.

SCRATCH TESTS (PERCUTANEOUS TESTS):
These tests consist of slightly pricking the skin of the back with pointed plastic devices that
are first dipped in allergen extracts.

INTRADERMAL TESTING:
The allergen extract is injected inside the skin of the arm. This test is only performed if the
scratch test for the corresponding allergen was negative.

The tests, if positive, will result in the appearance of wheals or hives associated with redness
of the skin and itching. The hives and redness will be measured and recorded. They will
disappear soon after.
Very rarely, some patients may display relatively severe reactions such as wheezing or a drop
in their blood pressure. So, patients will be observed during and shortly after this procedure.
